In the first half of this month, more than 1,400 rape and sexual assault cases were reported to police across Australia, including more than 700 in Sydney.
More than one-third of all rape cases reported in Sydney this year involved a man who was intoxicated and had a gun.
While the numbers of reports are low, the seriousness of the crime has raised alarm bells.
Victims often struggle to access the services they need, such as counselling, alcohol and drug treatment and social support.
In Melbourne, a national survey by the Rape Crisis Centre found a quarter of rape survivors had experienced abuse from the partner or other family member in the past year.
The survey found more than 70 per cent of women had been victims of rape, and nearly 40 per cent had experienced physical violence.
